Emissions Monitoring System

Concept
The introduction of the Australian carbon tax system imposed a need for mine sites to accurately calculate the amount of carbon dioxide and methane produced for NGERS reporting. As a result, underground coal mines demand a clearly defined and reliable method to produce reports on levels of underground fugitive emissions.

Delta Automation introduced a complete solution from hardware to software to allow monitoring and reporting on CO2 and CH4 produced from the mine and exhausted via the ventilation system.

Description
The CEMS continuously collects data from vent fans and calculates the CO2 and CH4 tonnage emitted. Our gas conditioning system and use of high quality Emerson X-Stream gas analysers provide both accuracy and reliability through a design specifically targeted for the environment where it will be installed. Emissions Reporting software is supplied to produce numerical and graphical reports on the amount of CO2 and CH4 detected in the sample ready for the NGERS reporting.

Design
A hazardous area assessment has been carried out on the design and a report is supplied to the client to ensure appropriate equipment is used to comply with mine department regulations.

The system is composed of two cabinets; one that holds the gas conditioning and sampling equipment and the other which holds the electrical control and monitoring system

Components

The CEMS Hardware
The CEMS use Emerson X-Stream gas analysers to provide a high level of accuracy, fast response and long term stability.

An IECEx rated motor coupled with a diaphragm pump is used to pull gas from the mine vent fans.

Water traps, particulate filters and air dryers are used to filter the sample gases from water and dust to ensure trouble free operation.

The CEMS Software
The CEMS use Deltamation Carbon Emissions Reporting Software specifically designed to create meaningful reports from analysed samples ready for NGERS reporting.

The Carbon Emissions software produce numerical and graphical reports on the amount of CO2 and CH4 produced. The software uses an SQL database to record historical data for decision making and setting reduction targets.
